Nebbiolo d'Alba DOCG 2017 SORDO

Description
Nebbiolo d'Albasa is a red wine from Piedmont, carried by a fruity and generous backbone, then embellished with those pleasant spicy and tertiary tones that come from a nine-month passage in large Slavonian oak barrels.
A Nebbiolo d'Alba, then, that you will very easily uncork when you bring it to the table to discover a truly pleasing red wine that is particularly versatile and eclectic when paired with food.
Intense garnet red to the eye. On the nose, first hints of red berry fruit, followed by ethereal tones, spicy nuances and hints of tobacco. In the mouth it is full-bodied, warm and balanced, well processed in the tannin structure and characterised by an excellent length.

Family history
Sordo is an iconic winery with a 100-year history. It is a family-run winery and one of the largest privately owned wineries in the Langhe. The winery covers 53 hectares of land and produces 8 Barolo crus, including the famous Monprivato. The company headquarters is located in Castiglione Falletto, surrounded by some of their vineyards. Giorgio is the third generation owner and manages the vineyards himself, while the wines have always been made under the supervision of the famous oenologist Armando Cordero, who worked at Sordo until his death a few years ago. Sordo has a rare and historic archive of old vintages dating back to 1962. Therefore, it is a great privilege to sell the wines in vertical and horizontal form, both for private customers and fine restaurants. Several old vintages of different crus are still available. The underground cellar, 12 meters below ground, ensures that the wines are stored at the right temperature. If you want to appreciate the place where the best wines are kept, you must visit the magical infernòt, a Piedmontese word meaning "small dark cellar" where the family jealously keeps the best wines, and then follow the tunnel where large bottle formats age, all the way down to the new tasting room. Today, the new winemaker follows the protocol left by Mr. Cordero. He works alongside Giorgio, who is also actively involved in the winemaking.

Philosophy

Sordo is a traditionalist and focuses on making very elegant Barolo, aged in large Slavonian bottles. His uniqueness is the ability to produce wines that show the same style on different terroirs, expressing what the precious heart of the Langhe zone can offer. The use of wild yeast, the practice of green manuring show Sordo's utmost respect for the land. The production of the winery is varied. It includes white wines such as Langhe Bianco (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier in 'purezza' (a very small production). The local grape Roero Arneis is also celebrated as is a sparkling wine, Alta Langa DOCG, made from Pinot and Chardonnay and aged on its lees for 36 months. The bulk of production revolves around red wines. They range from fruity and vibrant Dolcetto, Barbera and Langhe Rosso, a wine made from a local grape called Pelaverga, to more structured wines like Nebbiolo d'Alba and Barbaresco (from leased landowners). But the real heart of their red wine production is their Barolo classico (produced from 16 different vineyards), and the 8 Barolo Crus: Monvigliero, Parussi, Ravera, Gabutti, Villero, Monprivato, Rocche di Castiglione and Perno. Some of these crus are also available in the Riserva category and in magnum formats. In 2013, Giorgio Sordo decided to bottle Monprivato, a very limited production and the wines are strictly "en primeur" every year. In 2014, a new winery was built with an amazing tasting room, a showroom in the shape of a half barrel where you can discover and buy all the amazing wines with all the ranges of Barolo up to 1990 - and a fully automated production line open to visitors. Sordo is a company that defends tradition but welcomes innovation. By frequently acquiring new vineyards and lands, the winery ensures that new wines are released to expand the range: a Barolo del Comune di La Morra and a new Barolo cru called "La Volta". Giorgio Sordo continues to explore new sites and apply its traditional approach to its wines. A very essential trait of the company is its philosophy regarding pricing. Sordo wants to produce fine wines that are unique, but that people can afford to drink and enjoy on a daily basis. Today, Sordo is present in almost all countries and is constantly collecting recognitions and awards. In recent years, a sister company has been created: Paola Sordo, a brand founded by Giorgio Sordo in honor of his daughter Paola, who represents the fourth generation of the Sordo family. Paola is an outgoing young woman who works passionately alongside her father to grow the business and conquer new markets, and she is the face of the winery on social media.
